What are manual driving lessons?

Manual driving lessons are the most common driving lessons students choose to do, as these provide training and a licence for a manual shift car. In a manual driving lesson, you will be taught how to use the clutch and change gears, alongside the other skills you need to help you to pass your practical driving test.

What are the benefits of manual driving lessons?

When deciding if you want to do manual driving lessons, it’s important to know the benefits of learning to drive a manual car and having a manual driving licence.

  • Flexible licence: Knowing how to drive a manual car allows you to operate a wider variety of vehicles, including automatics, whereas you’ll be limited to automatic cars with an automatic licence.
  • Cost savings: Manual cars are often less expensive to buy and maintain compared to automatics.
  • Better vehicle control: Manual cars allow for more control of gears and power, making them ideal for challenging driving conditions, such as steep hills or slippery surfaces.
  • Increased focus and skill: Driving a manual car requires coordination and concentration, which can improve your overall driving ability and awareness.
  • Fuel efficiency: In many cases, manual cars can be more fuel-efficient than automatics, especially when driven skillfully.

So, by choosing manual driving lessons, you’ll equip yourself with a valuable skill that opens up more driving opportunities and enhances your overall competence on the road.

The difference between manual and automatic cars

Choosing between automatic and manual transmission driving lessons depends on your driving needs, preferences, and future plans. For example, those with a manual driving licence will be able to drive both manual and automatic cars, which doesn’t apply to those with an automatic licence who will be limited to automatic cars only.

For these reasons, it’s important to know the difference before booking your driving lessons.

Manual Cars

Manual cars, also known as “stick shifts,” require the driver to manually change gears using a clutch pedal and gear stick. This setup allows for a more direct and involved driving experience, which some drivers find engaging and enjoyable.  However, it requires more skill and coordination, especially in scenarios like hill starts or heavy traffic.

Automatic Cars

On the other hand, automatic cars handle the gear changes for you, eliminating the need for a clutch pedal, which can be simpler for some learners as there is less to operate whilst driving. They are particularly convenient in stop-and-go traffic as you do not need to control the clutch.

Automatic transmission cars are becoming more popular in new cars, so when you pass, there are more options for purchase. However, these can be more expensive to purchase and maintain.
