PAUL FARRAR

When it came to the time to retire, Paul decided that he didn’t want to be sitting around doing nothing, so decided to find a flexible job where he could utilise a number of the skills he had learnt throughout his career.

JOHN NICHOLSON

JOHN NICHOLSON

John was a member of the Armed Forces for 23 years before joining RED in 2014. John was somewhat cautious when deciding what driving school could deliver a training package and support system that would allow him to achieve his goal with minimum fuss.

Natalie was an ICT teacher, but after 13 stressful years and several anxiety attacks, she was left unable to walk into a school building happily again. She decided to find a job which helped her regain her composure, spend time with her family, and enjoy life to the fullest. She has now been a driving instructor for two years, and has found the switch a great release of tension.
"If you don’t try it, you won’t know that it could be better than what you’re currently doing!"

the process explained

Part one of the qualification process comprises two separate tests, and you are required to pass them both.

The theory test checks your knowledge of the Highway Code, general road safety, driving techniques, basic first aid knowledge and the theory of instructing a pupil. RED provides you with all the necessary training material, accessible online, and you can attempt as many mock tests as you wish on the training website to gauge your progress. The test lasts 90 minutes and you must achieve an 85 percent mark to pass.

The second part of the examination is a practical driving test designed to evaluate your driving ability.

Potential driving instructors must pass their theory test before moving onto part 2.

You must complete this test within two years of passing your theory test.

The instructional ability test evaluates your ability to instruct a student. This is the final test in the process.

Students must pass both part 1 and 2 before moving onto the instructional ability test.

You must complete this test within two years of passing your theory test.

RR trainer teaching a driving instructor trainee

The DVSA will issue you with what is, in effect, a provisional license to ‘teach for reward’. This means that you can join RED as a potential driving instructor (PDI) and begin giving actual lessons. This is an extremely effective way of honing your skills in instructional ability ahead of your part three test. It also means that you start to make a living as a driving instructor. Your trainee licence is valid for six months, and you will continue to receive 20 hours of in-car training on a one-to-one basis from a RED trainer prior to your part three test. On passing the test you can apply to be added to the DVSA register of approved driving instructors. The majority of trainees take this route.

A small number of RED trainees choose to continue their training until test-ready without the use of a trainee licence.

The majority of RED’s training is based locally, although in some circumstances it will take place in a mutually convenient location. We would often advise you to train where you are taking your practical tests. Bear in mind, the course is not full-time and, because we work around your other commitments, some of your time will be spent studying at home.
