Before your first journey each day, complete a full walkaround inspection covering:
Lights and indicators: Make sure all bulbs are working, lenses are clean and not cracked.
Tyres and wheels: Check for cuts, bulges, tyre pressure, and tread depth.
Mirrors and glass: No cracks or damage that could impair vision.
Wipers and washers: Ensure they operate correctly and washer fluid is topped up.
Bodywork and doors: Look for sharp edges, insecure panels or loose fittings.
Number plates: Are clean and legible.
Leaks: Check under the vehicle for fuel, oil, or other fluid leaks.
Brakes and horn: Test for proper operation.
Steering: Ensure there’s no unusual play or stiffness.
Seatbelts: Check they fasten securely and retract properly.
Dashboard warning lights: Ensure none are lit unnecessarily after starting.
Tachograph: If you have one, check it’s calibrated and ready to use.
All defects must be documented and reported immediately.
Summer driving brings heavy traffic, more cyclists and pedestrians, and potential vehicle strain. Plan routes carefully, maintain fluid levels, stay hydrated, and watch for fatigue. Always carry sunglasses and never leave pets in a parked car.
Fatigue is a major cause of accidents. Watch for warning signs like yawning, heavy eyes, or drifting in your lane. Microsleeps—even just 5 seconds—can be fatal. Avoid driving when excessively tired, especially during early morning or mid-afternoon hours.
If you’re using a new or different vehicle:
Learn the layout of controls (lights, wipers, hazards).
Understand load limits and handling.
Adjust mirrors to eliminate blind spots.
Test-drive in a safe area to get comfortable with vehicle characteristics.
