Pete Chiston had to say “The fast track training was very intense and a lot to take in over three days however the follow up support from my in car trainer David was great and tailored to meet my very hands on approach to learning, this in combination with the office support has meant that the process although at points very challenging was still a positive overall experience.”

How
How it works

How to become a driving instructor

Part one of the qualification process comprises two separate tests, and you are required to pass them both.

The theory test checks your knowledge of the Highway Code, general road safety, driving techniques, basic first aid knowledge and the theory of instructing a pupil. RED provides you with all the necessary training material, accessible online, and you can attempt as many mock tests as you wish on the training website to gauge your progress. The test lasts 90 minutes and you must achieve an 85 percent mark to pass.

The second part of the examination is a practical driving test designed to evaluate your driving ability.

Potential driving instructors must pass their theory test before moving onto part 2.

You must complete this test within two years of passing your theory test.

The instructional ability test evaluates your ability to instruct a student. This is the final test in the process.

Students must pass both part 1 and 2 before moving onto the instructional ability test.

You must complete this test within two years of passing your theory test.

The DVSA will issue you with what is, in effect, a provisional license to ‘teach for reward’. This means that you can join RED as a potential driving instructor (PDI) and begin giving actual lessons. This is an extremely effective way of honing your skills in instructional ability ahead of your part three test. It also means that you start to make a living as a driving instructor. Your trainee licence is valid for six months, and you will continue to receive 20 hours of in-car training on a one-to-one basis from a RED trainer prior to your part three test. On passing the test you can apply to be added to the DVSA register of approved driving instructors. The majority of trainees take this route.

A small number of RED trainees choose to continue their training until test-ready without the use of a trainee licence.

The part 3 test of instructional ability is approximately one-hour long. A DVSA examiner will watch you delivering a client centred driving lesson to one of your customers. This can be a learner or a full licence holder. The examiner will be looking for evidence that you meet the national standard for driver and rider training. You are only permitted three attempts at the part 2 and part 3 tests, so it is very important to choose the right school when deciding to train as a driving instructor.

Atia Farooqi

I began training in 2017 with RED whilst working full time, before I officially started working towards a trainee license in January 2018.

One of the main reasons I love being a driving instructor is that it gives me flexibility to work around my family , which is very important to me. It’s also rewarding helping people achieve their driving goals, from mastering manoeuvrers during lessons to finally passing their test. Every lesson is different – no matter how many times you teach it – because all students learn differently.

Rory Higham

I’ve been a driving instructor with RED for around 7 years now. Prior to my career as a DI, I used to be a tennis coach, but I’d always enjoyed driving and decided to step into the industry after I’d finished university – and I’m so glad I did.

What I love the most about being a driving instructor is the flexibility it provides me, as I get to work to my own schedule. It’s also very rewarding helping learners grow their confidence, taking them from their first lesson to the moment they pass their test. Even though I mostly train instructors now, that feeling hasn’t changed!

The majority of RED’s training is based locally, although in some circumstances it will take place in a mutually convenient location. We would often advise you to train where you are taking your practical tests. Bear in mind, the training course is not full-time and, because we work around your other commitments, some of your time will be spent studying at home.

If you wish, we can arrange for the majority of your training to take place on a Saturday. (Subject to availability)

The DVSA sets the tests you need to take to become a driving instructor. The DVSA does make these tests challenging in order to ensure those who pass are fully prepared to take on the responsibility of teaching.
As with any adult learning course, becoming a driving instructor requires hard work and commitment. But, with determination and drive, and the support and expertise from RED, there is no reason why you cannot pass the tests and begin your career as a driving instructor.
