5 Steps to get a licence

Before you can start learning to drive, you must apply for a provisional licence.

You can apply for your provisional licence either online or in person at your local post office.

To apply online for your provisional driving licence go to GOV.UK. Alternatively, you can apply for your provisional licence by completing the D1 application form, available at your local Post Office.

What is the first step?

Before you can start learning to drive, you must apply for a provisional licence.

How many lessons do I need?

The average person requires around 45 hours of tuition and a further 22 hours of practise before they are test-ready (according to the DVSA). However, every person is different and some may need fewer hours, while others may require more.

What if I don't like my instructor?

We strive to ensure that every person who learns to drive with RED, does so in the most comfortable environment possible. If you need to change your instructor – for example, you are moving to a new location – please let us know and we can organise a replacement.

Can I get my money back?

We offer a no quibble refund policy, so you’re always safe in the knowledge that if you have to stop your lessons for any reason, your money is not lost.

INSURANCE

LEARNER DRIVER INSURANCE

Learner driver insurance is temporary car insurance for learner drivers, irrespective of whether you are learning with RED, which allows you to get some practice sessions in your own car, or in a friend’s or relative’s car. It covers you as a provisional driving licence holder to drive in the short term whilst being properly supervised.

The DVSA states that, on average, it takes 45 hours of professional instruction and 22 hours of private practice to learn to drive. RED’s Learner insurance is a great way to gain those extra recommended hours.

Policies start from 1 day up to 5 months
It’s your policy, it doesn’t impact the car owner’s no claim’s bonus

Dave Dunsford

I’ve been a driving instructor for over 20 years. I started out as a new driver instructor and now also train people to become driving instructors, so I’ve seen it all!

The test and driving regulations has changed over the years and at RED we really focus on ensuring that our learners are 100% confident and competent with independent driving.

As a parent myself I understand that patience is key through the instruction process, everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. It’s all about encouraging progression in a way that benefits the student and manages expectations. There’s nothing like the feeling when a student passes or achieves their goals – it’s a process you go through together.

I’ve taught thousands of people over the years and whether your aim is passing your driving test or refreshing certain skills, I’d say go for it! The freedom and confidence that safe driving gives you is simply incredible.

WORRIED ABOUT DRIVING ON THE MOTORWAY?

MOTORWAY DRIVING LESSONS

You’ll have passed the test, probably without ever having driven on a motorway. (You’re certain to use a motorway at some stage.) Driving on motorways is statistically very safe, but it can be very daunting and dangerous to the untrained.
We recommend motorway driving lessons to all of our learners-generally once they have passed their practical driving test. Motorway driving does require additional skills and with the introduction of “Smart Motorways” there’s plenty to learn.
We will create a bespoke session for our course depending upon your needs and location. Call our contact centre.
You don’t have to have passed your test with RED to benefit from this course. You’ll learn in safety and your instructor will cover everything that you need including high-speed entry and exits, lane use and changing lanes, high-speed observations and how to best maintain a safe space for your vehicle.
